As many of you know at Habitat, we like to say we are a hand up, not a hand out, but that hand up can look differently to each of us. For some a hand up is being afforded the opportunity to build a new home, and a new future – one full of possibilities and promise. For others it might be a new water heater, a new roof or grab bars. For one Arizona homeowner, it was a new wheelchair ramp. Housing and its related issues are simply more costly than ever before. Those paying rent in Arizona are facing a more than 30% increase just in the last three years and oftentimes their wages haven’t budged. Many hard-working families in Arizona could use a hand up. Habitat is not immune to the challenges of our current economy. While new construction continues to be the mainstay of our mission, the rising costs of land and construction materials are forcing us to serve families in other ways. More of our time and resources are going to home repair, preservation and neighborhood revitalization projects, and there is no shortage of families that can’t afford the work they really need done on their homes to keep them safe and sound. Our repair programs, are focused on helping Arizona seniors, veterans and families that need emergency work done.
