Modernity & Sustainability

Southern California’s historic “Case Study” houses gave rise to the “Mid-Century” style, seeking modernity and affordability. Their innovation is the inspiration for today’s modern, sustainable home on a budget – The Arizona Green House Project.

Solar Power

With enough capacity and battery storage to be “off-the-grid” optional and EMP resistant, the design is a model of energy independence.

Water Conservation

Well usage, rainwater harvesting, greywater reuse, low-flow plumbing fixtures, and natural xeriscape landscaping allows for water self-sustainability.

Food Self-Sufficiency

New composting and companion planting techniques, with well, rainwater and greywater usage, create a near food self-sufficient garden and orchard.

Eco-Friendly Interiors

Low VOCs, zero formaldehyde, limited interior paints, stains, and rugs, with extensive use of natural materials, makes for a cleaner interior environment. A unique indoor/outdoor flex dining room showcases adaptive living.

Cave Creek, Arizona

Preserving a Rare Riparian Area & Breathtaking Views

Situated on a unique 5.8-acre parcel in Cave Creek Arizona, with its historic namesake creek flowing seasonally through the property, the Arizona Green House will be perched on a crest 110 feet above the waterline.

Yes, natural waterfront property in the greater Phoenix area!

Thoughtful planning has prioritized the priceless 360-degree views and the lush natural desert vegetation that includes two-dozen magnificent saguaro cacti, reaching heights of 25 feet and 150+ years in age.

Not a single one of these desert titans will be disturbed from their habitat. A majority of the parcel will be left undisturbed, in its beautiful natural state.

Energy Efficiencies

With extensive shading from architectural overhangs, limited windows with western exposure, Low-E high-efficiency windows, and doors, low wattage LED lighting, Energy Star-rated appliances, and the most modern of mini-split HVAC equipment, the house will use significantly less energy. When paired with its solar power, the Arizona Green House will produce more energy than it uses.

Recycled Materials

With the use of Cor-Ten steel siding and steel roofing, recycled “blue-jean” insulation, and decorative use of repurposed cargo container doors, the project will utilize recycled materials whenever possible.

Lifetime Materials

Unique Japanese Shou Sugi Ban burnt cedar siding, metal roofing and concrete flooring offer a lifetime of maintenance-free durability.

Passive Green Design

The passive building design specifically captures the dramatic views while limiting solar heat gains. It's light footstep on the unique land, conserving water and protecting the lush desert vegetation shows the care in planning taken towards its sustainable goals.
